Oceanography of the Intra-Americas Sea

Welcome, IASlinks.org endeavors to foster oceanographic research in the Gulf of Mexico / Caribbean Sea (Intra-Americas Sea) system. It is our goal to develop an interest in regional scale coordinated studies, by helping to disseminate information on ongoing research programs, existing data sources, and regional institutions, scientists, and organizations.

Visit the Naval Research Laboratory's (NRL) Layered Ocean Model (NLOM) real-time nowcast / forecast site. Data products (updated daily) are available from the 1/16° global model for several ocean regions, including the Intra-Americas Sea. Products include real-time regional plots and movies of sea surface height (SSH), sea surface temperature (SST) and surface currents. The site also includes MODAS (1/8° global Modular Ocean Data Assimilation) SSH and SST analyses.
The 1/16° global NLOM is run daily by the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) with atmospheric forcing from the Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS) and assimilation of SST and satellite altimeter data obtained from NAVOCEANO. Questions regarding the data available at this NRL site should be directed to Tammy Townsend. To view the movies available, you may need to download an animation viewer such as the Autodesk Animation Player.
